S&P 500, Dow eye fresh highs as US stocks edge up after strong jobless-claims data

The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average are poised to mark new highs, as positive year-end momentum continued into the second-to-last trading session of the year.

The S&P 500 could set a new record close, while the Dow could extend its winning streak to seven days. There is a chance the indexes will reach new highs on Friday.
