James Anderson said he believed the England side had a good chance of beating Australia in the series.

After 12 days of cricket, England have lost the five- match series to Australia.

The tourists have lost 12 and drawn one of their 13 Tests in Australia.

The first three games have been very close. Anderson said the guys are pretty flat.

On the third day of the third Test, England were dismissed for just 68 as Australia completed a crushing victory.

They haven't passed 300 with the bat in the series so far, and have been whitewashed for under 200 three times.

Anderson told Test Match Special that he thought they had a good chance when they arrived.

I thought the squad we've got would be able to compete, but it's not.

The first three games have been really tough, so the more senior players have to rally round and make sure everyone is ready to play.

Anderson missed the first Test with a calf injury but played in the other two.

He has been involved in five of the past six Australia's against England.

Since then, England has lost in the last two years, with a whitewash in the last two years.

"We have to throw everything at the next two games," Anderson said.

"We're aware that we've got a lot of support and I know people are getting up in the middle of the night to watch us."

"We're not giving them what they want to see, so we're gutted."

Questions about the domestic structure and whether players are prepared for Test cricket have arisen from England's heavy defeat.

Anderson said he hoped the balance between red and white-ball cricket would be fixed.

"I think that white ball cricket is tipped slightly towards white ball at the moment," Anderson said.

Over the last few years, our Test cricket performances have been pretty inconsistent.

"So, from that point of view, we can hopefully just make up for that balance a little bit."

Chris Silverwood, who has been heavily criticized after England's defeat, was forced to take a break for 10 days.

England will have a fourth round of tests on Thursday.
