A growing number of high-profile Chinese players have tattoos, including experienced international defender Zhang Linpeng, who has previously been told to cover up while appearing for both the national team and club side Guangzhou FC.

The General Administration of Sport of China (GAS) said in a statement that the Chinese Football Association would set out rules for national team players.

National teams at all levels will strictly implement the management measures and show the positive spirit of Chinese football players.

The national team and the U23 national team athletes are not allowed to have new tattoos, and those who already have tattoos are advised to remove them themselves.

The players must cover their tattoos during training and matches if there are special circumstances.

It said that tattoos were not allowed for teams at U20 level and below.

The GAS said that national teams should organizeideological and political education activities that would strengthen the patriotic education of players.

It said that doing so would enhance the sense of mission, responsibility and honour, and create a national team capable of conquering and fighting well and with excellent style of play.

China's national team have failed to qualify for the World Cup finals since making their debut appearance in 2002 and are currently in fifth place in their six-team qualification group.
