Spider-Man No Way Home: Maguire, Garfield Had Script Input

Fourteen and seven years. It has been over a year since audiences last saw Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in a Spider-Man movie. It is a lot of time and if they were to ever appear on screen again, one would imagine each actor would have some thoughts about it. If.

At this point, there are no more "ifs." Spider-Man: No Way Home is a sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Man. Their appearances were considered a secret of the highest order, and though most people had connected the dots in the months leading up to the movie's release, it's hugely satisfying to see them appear. They don't show up. The main Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland, was the main reason for the roles being written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The writers worked on script pages to give the actors a place to put their Spider-Man, and each actor helped immensely with that. What happened to them off screen in the years following the previous films was included.

Tobey wanted to be very minimal about how much he knew. Very, very minimal. The idea that Andrew was still tortured over what happened in Spider-Man 2 and how they could bring that to Tom was very appealing. We can relate to you. We know what you are going through. If anyone in the world knows what you are going through, it is us. But also, that we can be a beacon.

In the film, we know that Spider-Man is still with his girlfriend, but not much else. Garfield admits that he has gone to a dark place since Gwen was killed and hasn't found a new girlfriend. The complex dynamic was added by the fact that each character is still struggling with being Spider-Man.

Tobey has come through that darkness. We thought it was cool that Andrew was still in the dark. They were here to help you take down the bad guys, and they were Jedi knight heroes. They are going through things of their own. We were trying to write up the characters that they did a great job of creating and really being true to those characters and those stories and those worlds so that it didn't feel like we were doing curtain call, fan-service.

The Hollywood Reporter has more on how the two actors came back to the franchise.
