Marvel's Eternals Once Had a Darker Ending, According to Chloé Zhao

It is difficult to end a movie. On the other hand, there needs to be growth for the story and characters. There needs to be enough room for the franchise to continue. Each film tries to balance the two things, and the post-credit scenes in Eternals are no different. The film was being made when the ending was tried that didn't split the middle.

Eternals go to a planet to make sure it is safe for a Celestial birth that will save many others, then have their memories wiped before moving onto the next one, according to the film. The Eternals save Earth from the Celestials and are forced to deal with the consequences. Being whisked off to god knows where Arishem is for part of the team. For the others, it means traveling the galaxy to educate other Eternals to their struggle.

That is what happens in the film. The Eternals are still carrying on with the Cinematic Universe. According to Zhao, the ending wasn't always the end. We had another ending that was really bad. A leak. I am used to films that are more melancholy. She said that she didn't think it went well with audiences. This ending would have given the Eternals part of the victory. It used to end with everyone back on the ship, minds erased and just going on to another planet, like The Twilight Zone, according to the Oscar-winner. Everyone was confused when it went to black. You want to be excited for what is to come. Earth was saved, the MCU still existed, but these key characters didn't remember any of it.

Changing endings on her films is not a new occurrence. I have never made a film where the ending is what I wrote. She said you find it in the edit. When you show a film to people, you find the end. I don't think I've ever made a film where the opening and ending are the same as the script. Yes, even in the MCU.
