The Mann Act criminalizes transporting a person across state lines to commit a sexual act, and two charges of conspiracy to violate the Mann Act were brought against him.
The testimony of a woman who went by the name of Carolyn, who said that she was hired as a 14-year-old to engage in sexualized massages with Epstein, was the basis for the sex trafficking conviction.
Sex trafficking charges apply to cases of moving a person or commerce across state lines to facilitate a commercial sex act or sexual contact with a minor, even though the Mann Act prohibits interstate transportation in order to take part in criminal sex acts.
During the trial, Jane testified that she was sexually abused by Maxwell and Epstein at the latter's home in Palm Beach, Florida.
Her defense team said that she was being treated as a scapegoat for the suicide of the man she was accused of pimping. According to the New York Times, the lawyer for the woman said that women have been blamed for the bad behavior of men since Eve was tempted with the apple. Four women testified that Maxwell helped groom them as teenagers for sexual activity with Epstein, sometimes when the girls were as young as 14 years old. On Christmas Day, he was 60 years old. She has been in police custody since her arrest.

The biggest hurdle for the prosecution in the case was accounting for how witnesses changed their accounts over time, according to a former felony prosecutor. For some of the witnesses, it took more than a decade for them to testify at the trial. The defense team tried to convince the jury that the women were driven by the prospect of payouts from a compensation fund for Epstein's victims and civil lawsuits filed before the late financier's death by suicide. The prosecution and witnesses said their testimonies grew as they became more comfortable speaking out.
Surprising fact.
There is a dark history to the Mann Act. It was passed in 1910 to prevent women from being sold into sexual slavery, but during the Jim Crow era it was used to prosecute interracial couples. Jack Johnson, a black world champion boxer, was sentenced to 10 months in prison for violating the Mann Act after he traveled across state lines with white women. Johnson was posthumously pardoned by President Donald Trump. The Mann Act is used by federal prosecutors to prosecute travel in connection with sex with children. R. Kelly was convicted of eight Mann Act violations this year, all related to transporting and coercing two women, one of whom was a minor.
