The Female Athlete of the Year is named by the Associated Press.

After 13 years with the Los Angeles Sparks, she signed with the Chicago Sky in hopes of winning a title. The Sky beat the Mercury in four games to win the title.

She told the AP's Doug Feinberg that there was something about going to where you started playing the game. It's great to play in front of people who first saw me pick up a basketball. To win at home is something I'm starting to understand. That is really special. Something is on my list.

In the regular season, he averaged 13.3 points, 8.4 rebound and 4.0 assists.

She had a double-double in the team's title-clinching victory. Her leadership helped Chicago remain even-keeled before out scoring the Mercury in the fourth quarter.

The Sky squad that had shown promise but failed to advance past the second round in its last two playoff appearances was missing the exact ingredient.

The second title was a legacy-affirming achievement for the player.

She might be a two-time Most Valuable Player, six-time All-Star and a future Hall of Famer, but her greatness has been taken for granted at times. She's a talent that's going to be around for a long time.

Whenever she retires from the WNBA, her legacy in Chicago could extend well beyond her tenure there.

Prior to her signing, the Sky weren't a big draw for marquee stars. Elena Delle Donne engineered an exit from her job in 2017. The organization could benefit from that trend being reversed.

She could help the city of Chicago become a major market for the WNBA. In their first two years at Wintrust Arena, the Sky were sixth in average attendance. They were second in 2021.

Sky could get a lot of new fans if the 2021 championship is a winner.
