Frank Reich will start Sam Ehlinger against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday if veteran Carson Wentz is not cleared to play.
On Tuesday, he was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. He was supposed to miss 10 days for being unvaccinated and testing positive, but the new CDC guidelines will reduce the time to five days.
IfWentz clears his fifth day, he would be available for the game on Sunday. If he clears, he can play. Sam is our starter. I'm excited for him.
The Colts were able to add Rock Ya-Sin, Mark Glowinski, and Quenton Nelson to their roster on Wednesday because of the new NFL guidelines.
If he is symptom-free, the Colts' medical and training staff will give him a home workout program if he is not allowed in the team's facility during this five-day stretch.
Reich said he reached out to the 40-year-old Rivers, who helped lead the Colts to an 11-5 record and the playoffs in 2020. After the season, Rivers retired to coach high school football.
Reich said that he was close to him. We talked all year long. I talked to him recently. He and his family were on vacation. I have talked to him about our situation, but nothing has been said.
The Colts' third quarterback was Ehlinger, a sixth-round pick who has yet to attempt a pass in a regular-season game. He missed the start of the regular season after suffering a knee injury in a preseason game, but returned to the team as the backup in October.
Reich said that he thinks Sam is made for moments like this. He has a special factor. Has good quarterback skills. Has continued to improve. Excited about the chance to prepare this week and see how it goes.
