Australian man banned from leaving Israel for 8,000 years over unpaid child support

Australian citizens are banned from leaving Israel until 9999.

An Australian citizen has been barred from leaving Israel for failing to pay child support.

Noam Huppert has been ordered to pay his ex-wife over two million dollars in child support.

He was told by an Israeli court that he was banned from travelling until he paid the money.

He said that he was locked in Israel because he was married to an Israeli woman.

Huppert has two children with his former Israeli wife.

Huppert's former spouse moved back to the country when their children were three months and five years old.

He followed his family in 2012 and has not been able to leave since the court ruling.

Men who are married to Israeli women don't get divorced.

Men are often ordered to pay more of their income to pay for their children.

The United States state department warns US citizens that Israel's civil and religious courts have the power to bar certain individuals from leaving the country until debts or other legal claims against them are resolved.
