In latest Covid surge, front-line workers say vaccination is tied to symptoms

The latest surge of Covid-19 cases, driven by the highly contagious omicron variant, has physicians around the country telling patients that they need to get their vaccinations.

If you get boosted and get Covid, you end up with bad cold symptoms. Matthew Bai is an emergency medicine physician at Mount Sinai Queens in New York City.

If you start out with a weakened immune system, your immune response won't be as strong with a booster. He said that a booster would definitely make a difference in an average person.

The chief of critical care services at Houston's United Memorial Medical Center said that of the roughly 50 patients admitted to the hospital's Covid unit in the last four weeks, 100 percent of them were unvaccinated.

He said that patients who needed to be admitted have shortness of breath, high fevers, and are dehydrated like crazy. He said that people who are unvaccinated have more illness. You have a lot of pneumonia if you have more illness.

He said that people who are unvaccinated have a larger burden of illness in the lungs than those who are vaccine-free.

The people who received the booster shot were almost back to normal within a few days. He said that people who did not receive the booster tend to still feel sick after a week or so.

Patients who have received the booster shot may still have symptoms such as a sore throat, a lot of fatigue and muscle pain, said Dr. Craig Spencer, director of global health in emergency medicine at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center. They looked worse, because they didn't have the booster. He said that they didn't need to be hospitalized.

He said that he was not seeing people who had two doses and a booster who were coming in short of breath. It is not happening.

Those who have not received a booster have shown more symptoms than those who have, he said.

Spencer said that almost all of the patients he has seen were unvaccinated.

There are multiple presentations of this disease, that hasn't changed. We know that people who are vaccine free are less likely to end up in the hospital and need to be admitted. He said that was for certain.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the new omicron variant made up about 58 percent of all new Covid cases in the United States for the week ending December 25.

Early evidence shows that omicron is less likely to cause severe illness for most people who are up to date on their Covid vaccines.

A small study from the CDC suggests that people who have Covid and are re-instated with omicron may experience less symptoms than they did before.

According to reports out of the United Kingdom, people who were exposed to omicron in November and December were less likely to be hospitalized.

Even if omicron appears less likely to lead to severe illness than delta, physicians still stressed the importance of getting the vaccine and booster.

Spencer said that it can decrease the likelihood of you needing to be hospitalized with severe Covid if you are above 50.

He said that if you can prevent infections in younger people, you can hopefully prevent infections in older people, especially around the holidays.

He said that getting a booster dose in younger people is important in terms of prevention and control of infections.

The report shows that more than half of the patients in New Hampshire hospitals are unvaccinated.
