NFL shortens COVID quarantine period, confusion ensues

Symptomatic players and staff will only be out for five days.

The recommended time for isolation after a positive COVID test has been shortened from 10 to 5 days, with the next five days spent wearing a mask. The new CDC guidelines for players who have tested positive are being discussed by the NFL and NFLPA. Sources said the agreement could be finished as early as today.

The new guidelines from the CDC are limited to individuals who are not showing signs of illness. Many isolated players will be able to return earlier than expected for games this upcoming weekend because of this.

The number of players placed on the COVID reserve list on Monday was a new record, and many of them would be able to return for Sunday games if their team were playing.

The CDC recommends that players wear a mask for five days after being isolated, but it's not clear if they would. This adjustment would be an enormous help to teams trying to qualify for the playoffs, particularly those who have lost quarterbacks for a week or two due to existing COVID protocols.
