Holiday Bowl between UCLA and NC State Wolfpack canceled due to COVID-19 issues in Bruins program

3:44 PM

The Bruins were forced to pull out of the Holiday Bowl just hours before their game against NC State because of problems within the program.

The school made a decision around 3:30 p.m. On Tuesday.

The Holiday Bowl, students, fans, sponsors and the people of San Diego are all very important to UCLA. The young men in the football program worked very hard for this opportunity and we are deeply disappointed. My heart goes out to them. The health and safety of our students will always be our top priority.

The Bruins and Wolfpack were going to play in San Diego. On Tuesday.

"UCLA's statement makes it very clear that their inability to play was due to the protocols in place and not the virus itself," Nick Carparelli said in a text message. I feel bad for the teams and the people who worked so hard for the Holiday Bowl. This is a sad and frustrating situation.

The Holiday Bowl is the fifth bowl game to be canceled because of issues with at least one of the participating teams.

The Wolfpack, who were trying to win 10 games in a season for only the second time in the program's history, have their bowl game canceled. Boston College, Virginia and Miami were unable to play their games because of the issues with COVID-19.

NC State said in a statement that it was "heartbroken to not be able to compete one more time this season."

The Hurricanes were going to play Washington State in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, but had to pull out. Central Michigan will now play the Cougars.
