Bennett said he hasn't thought about his job security as he prepares to face Michigan in the Capital One Orange Bowl. He said he's barely aware of the debate.
Bennett doesn't have social media so he doesn't wallow in it. I don't sit in it. I don't think about it. All I'm thinking about is beating Michigan.
Todd Monken gave Bennett his full support Tuesday, saying the former walk-on gives Georgia its best chance to beat Michigan. Bennett will have another key contributor on offense in the College Football Playoff semifinal, as receiver George Pickens is expected to play after missing a week of bowl practice.
He's made national championship plays. Monken said that Bennett had. "You can see the throws he makes, the decisions he makes, the things he does with his feet on the film." I think we can win the national championship. I think we can win it with Stetson Bennett.
Bennett started the season as the backup quarterback for the team, but in Week 2 he threw for five touchdown as a result of former five-star recruit JT Daniels being injured. Bennett was the starter for the first time in the regular season, leading the team to a 12-0 record and a top ranking entering the SEC championship game.
After Alabama trounced UGA to win the SEC, Bennett's doubters wondered if the former walk-on was good enough to take the team to a national championship. Bennett said he doesn't let it affect him.
Bennett said that he wouldn't listen to himself if he was giving a speech. Why would I listen to someone who doesn't do this for a living? It doesn't bother me.
Daniels was hurt in a Week 4 game against the Commodores and has not played since. Monken said that Bennett took control of the job and never looked back.
Monken said that it was more like what Stetson did that gave them the best chance to win. We believe that his mobility in the run game and pass game will give us the best chance to win. We continued to win, because we took advantage of the opportunity that was given to us. It never ended up flipping the other way.
Bennett's mobility is a necessity in the Orange Bowl, with Michigan's defense featuring two of the country's top pass rushers in David Ojabo and Aidan Hutchinson.
Monken acknowledged that the debate largely surrounds the recruiting of both quarterbacks, and said he's bought in at times.
Monken said that he thought that Stetson had probably under valued his skill set. "We've tried to elevate guys that have talent on our roster, and we do that at every position, and some guys just combat that and fight and scratch and continue to play well and try to prove you wrong, and that's what Stetson Bennett did."
Injuries limited him to just two games and three catches. In the regular-season finale against Georgia Tech, he had two catches, despite missing the spring with an injury.
In last year's Peach Bowl, he had one of his best games, catching seven passes for 135 yards and a touchdown in a win over Cincinnati.
"There are some things that he's continued to work through, trusting the knee, obviously reps," Monken said. We're still trying to get him in and to make sure that he can help us and help us win.
