Sean McVay said Monday that running back Darrell Henderson Jr. will be placed on injured reserve because of a right knee injury.

Henderson, who has dealt with a quadriceps issue and also spent time on the reserve/COVID-19 list, suffered the injury at the end of a 17-yard carry in the fourth quarter of a 30-23 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday that sealed the Rams' fourth playoff berth in five

McVay said Henderson could return in three to five weeks.

McVay said that Darrell couldn't catch a break. He has a great run and it was one of those deals, where he went down on a good run.

While the loss of the third-year pro is a blow to the Rams' running back depth, McVay expressed optimism that Cam Akers would be available Sunday when the team travels to Baltimore to play the Ravens.

He could play this week, McVay said. He looked good in practice.

The Rams activated Akers from the non- football injury list two days after he was designated to return from the injury list, and five months after he tore his right Achilles in a private workout.

Despite his activation, Akers did not travel to Minnesota to play the Vikings, with his move to the active roster motivated by incentives and an opportunity to earn credit toward his pension.

"He's earned the right to be able to get on this roster and it looks like there's a possibility of him contributing as soon as this week actually on the field," McVay said.

Ernest Jones will also be placed on IR by the Rams. Jones, who has emerged as a key player since being promoted to starter in Week 8, will have surgery on his ankle.

"Ernest was just starting to hit his stride, and that's what he's been doing," McVay said about Jones. Hopefully he will get a chance to come back this year.

After Jones was hurt in the first quarter against the Vikings, Howard came on and made a great play.

In Week 13 of the season, after Henderson injured a quadriceps, the starting running back position was taken by the first-round pick from New England, and he played well.

He has since taken over as the Rams' leading running back, with 728 yards, and has displayed a knack for tackle-breaking runs.

Cooper Kupp said that he runs hard. You can feel the power that he has.

In four starts, the Rams' running back has produced two 100 yard rushing performances, becoming the first Rams player to do that since Todd Gurley in the regular season.

McVay said that Sony has been a workhorse for the last month. He's been one of the main players for us when we've gone four in a row.

It is not known how much Akers will contribute after he had a significant injury.

McVay said the Rams wouldn't hurry his return because of Henderson.

McVay wanted to make sure that we were smart. This guy is very impressive. He looked like he could play last week. With the minimal opportunities we've had to practice and how you want to be smart about going about that process and procedure, those are independent of one another.

Akers finished his first season with the Rams with 625 yards and two touchdown.

In the playoffs, he ran for 131 yards and a touchdown in the wild-card win over the Seattle Seahawks, then followed that up with 90 yards and a touchdown in the loss to the Green Bay Packers.
