Ashes: Joe Root's & Chris Silverwood's future, county cricket

The aftermath of England's dismal loss to Australia had begun barely minutes before.

There was a lot of talk of an "embarrassing" performance by England, as they were whitewashed by Australia in a three-Test series, and of the future of head coach Chris Silverwood.

There are careers on the line.

England started the third day on 31-4 and were looking to bat for time and give Australia a difficult fourth-innings chase.

There were encouraging early signs with drives from Ben and Joe, but the latter was taken down by Mitchell Starc.

The tourists lost their final five in 30 balls to fall from 60-5 to 68 all out in just 27.4 overs.

Steve Harmison, a former England pace bowler, said the performance was "embarrassing" and that careers were at stake.

"Australia are way ahead of England and have outplayed us in all three games", said All- rounder Moeen Ali, who retired from Test cricket in September but still plays white-ball cricket for England.

I didn't think the gap was that big before the series, but I think it's bigger than we're willing to admit. We have won many sessions in this series.

You need experience, a technique, and a lot of work to play Test cricket. I'm not saying we don't work hard, but I'm not sure we work on the right things often enough.

"We have some soul searching to do."

Jonathan Agnew told Test Match Special that England looked a beaten team and that if the series was played on a level playing field, Australia would be 15% better than England.

I would be surprised if he continues.

This tour would define the tenure of the captain.

He is England's most successful captain in terms of Test victories, but he has suffered two heavy defeats in Australia and a home series loss.

I would be surprised if Joe Root continued as captain.

I saw a tired figure down there and it hasn't affected his batting which could be the one thing that keeps him going.

"You can't start looking at things too far in the future", said Root.

It would be foolish to remove the captain and the coach from the team, said Harmison, who was part of England's 2005 Ashes-winning team.

Steven Finn questioned if Silverwood's role as head coach and chief selector was the right model going forward.

Finn said it was an interesting position. It is a lot of responsibility for one person.

If you're not in the best of form, you want to approach the coach and say: 'Coach, I'm in a hole, and I want you to help me.' Can you help me?

The reset button needs to be pressed.

England have been beaten by New Zealand and struggled in India during the winter, but have two matches left to play in the Ashes.

Red-ball cricket in England has been a topic of discussion throughout the year, and whether the model and times of the year at which it is played helps the Test team.

The white-ball competition, The Hundred, T20 Blast and One-Day Cup, are played throughout the summer months, with the County Championship being played at the start of the season and the end.

The Championship should be moved back to being the spine of the season rather than being thrown into the deep end, according to Agnew.

Red-ball cricket is not prioritised in England and it has been pushed to the side according to Jonathan Trott.

After being knocked out in the group stage of the 2015 50-over World Cup, England changed their style of cricket and won the world title in 2019.

The current red-ball team is in a worse state than the one England is in, according to Harmison.

There is only one batter in this team that is doing that consistently over a long period of time, and that is Joe Root.

The basics of how you learn the game are what Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head learned this summer.

It is not first-class cricket that is the problem, it is how we play it and when we play it. It gives us a chance to bridge the gap between playing at home and playing away and producing cricketers who have the concentration, skillset and ability to bat for six hours.

We have to find a balance between white-ball and red-ball cricket, not just with white-ball but with the commercial side of the game. I don't think we've seen red-ball cricket as bad in his country since I started playing.

How did you react on the show?

Abysmal is the Chase of the Guernsey. The England bowling team must be fed up because they are giving 100% and no back-up from the batting team over and over again. It really says something that one of the best Test years on record was by Root, and we have still been hammered time and time again.

It reminded me of how England faced Mitchell Johnson a few years ago. We don't want to be in the middle and throw away the crickets. Boland took advantage of Starc tormenting us.

The worst thing about this embarrassment by England is that it's not like we have anyone coming through banging on the door for a place in the team. Test cricketers are dying in England.

If you're English in Australia, keep your phone on and you might get a game in one of the cities.

The Aussies only scored 267 in their game against us. Beyond embarrassment. Changes need to be made. We don't deserve Jimmy and he should retire now.

Sometimes you need to hit rock bottom in order to make necessary changes. I hope this is now rock bottom.

We ran a poll in the live text commentary and found that optimism is low among England fans.

You can attend the Sydney Test on January 4.
