The omicron variant fuels record Covid-19 case loads in some states and holiday travel continues to be disrupted around the U.S., according to President Joe Biden's medical adviser.

Anthony Fauci said on MSNBC on Monday that it would be reasonable to consider a requirement to bevaccinated for coronaviruses before getting on a domestic flight. He said in an interview that people should avoid large New Year's Eve parties.

Fauci said that making vaccine a requirement is another incentive to get more people to be vaccine free. If you want to do that with domestic flights, that should be considered.

Biden said on Monday that Fauci had been asked about the new requirements for air travel. The lobbying group for major U.S. air carriers, Airlines for America, said that the administration had indicated that such a mandate wasn't coming in the near term.

The group said that they had been informed by the administration that there was no imminent policy proposal regarding a domestic travel requirement.

Fauci said that officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are seriously discussing whether it is possible to shorten isolation andQuarantine time for essential workers.

The flights have been scrapped.

Over the holiday weekend, about 2,800 flights were canceled because of personnel shortages, and some college football games were disrupted because of the shortage.

Despite gains in the broader market, United Airlines fell 0.9% in New York. Delta Air Lines and American Airlines Group both fell. Carnival Corp., Royal Caribbean Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line fell.

While some studies have suggested the omicron variant is less severe, rising case loads have prompted concerns that hospitals could still be overwhelmed with patients, a situation now being seen in pockets of the U.S.

The situation in the U.S. is expected to be discussed by Biden with the National Governors Association. The number of Covid-19 infections in New York rose to 49,708 on December 24.
