Central Michigan moves to face Washington State in Sun Bowl; Arizona Bowl canceled as COVID-19 disrupts football bowl season

Washington State and Central Michigan will play in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl on Friday, a move that allows both teams to play in a bowl game.

Both teams lost to their opponents. The Sun Bowl was scrambling for an opponent after Miami withdrew. The spot was filled by the Chippewas after their scheduled opponent, Boise State, withdrew from the Barstool Arizona Bowl on Monday.

The Sun Bowl was able to move forward with a game after the Arizona Bowl was canceled due to COVID-19 reasons.

The Sun Bowl Association, the Pacific-12 Conference, the Mid-American Conference, and Central Michigan University worked diligently to ensure the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl will be played in 2021, according to Washington State athletic director Pat Chun. A special thank you to the director of athletics at CMU and the head coach of the football team for making sure that the seniors who will be playing their final college football game get the most out of their bowl experience.

Washington State arrived in El Paso, Texas, for the Sun Bowl on Sunday, only hours before Miami announced it would not be able to play. The Arizona Bowl was being prepared by Central Michigan. The Sun Bowl said that the Chippewas are set up to travel four hours from El Paso to play.
