Jimmy Garoppolo was not with the 49ers for practice Monday because of a long holiday weekend.

Garoppolo suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament and a fractured thumb in the loss to the TennesseeTitans, according to a source. His playing status for Sunday's game is not certain.

The Niners went their separate ways for the past three days after the loss in Nashville, and Garoppolo did not participate in the Monday "bonus" practice. Lance took all of the work with the starters in Monday's practice, which was described as a walk-through.

Garoppolo was injured in the second quarter when he was sacked for a 7-yard loss by Denico Autry. Garoppolo missed a would-be touchdown throw to Kyle Juszczyk in the first half, but he still finished the game with a pair of costly turnovers.

Garoppolo's thumb was injured on the Niners' first offensive play of the third quarter, a pass intended for receiver Deebo Samuel that sailed into the waiting arms of Tennessee safety Amani Hooker for an pick-six that Tennessee turned into a game-tying touchdown.

Garoppolo finished with 322 yards and a touchdown for a 44.4 QBR.

He knew his thumb was hurting him. He tells us when he comes to the bench because we thought he jammed it.

Lance could be in line for his first extended work with the starters since before the Arizona game. Lance would make his second career start if Garoppolo is unable to play.

If Garoppolo progresses to that stage, the decision will be based on how he feels and how he looks throwing the ball. Lance has made good progress while running the scout team, according to the No. 3 overall pick in this year's draft.

"I think this last month of him has been his best since we had him," he said. He's had a number of good days and bad days, but as far as his consistency and stuff, I feel this last month has been his best.

The 49ers had other key players dealing with injuries. Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair has a knee injury that will keep him out at least the next two games, according to the coach.

The first Niner to be placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list since August is punterMitch Wishnowsky.
