Verizon partners with AR hardware maker Vuzix for some reason

Vuzix is a brand of phone company.

We haven't heard from Vuzix in a while. The first pair of consumer-ready smart glasses were released in early 2019. It has been relatively quiet over the past two years. The two didn't reveal much about their collaboration. They plan to find ways to use augmented reality in sports and gaming scenarios, especially those that need training. The Shield smart glasses will be combined with the capabilities of the 5G network.

It's hard to say if anything will come out of this agreement, but it's not a surprise to see the company become more involved in augmented reality. Wearables that are augmented, virtual and mixed reality are one of the primary beneficiaries of the speed and latency enhancements promised by 5G networks. The focus on gaming and sports is not surprising. The earliest places where 5G service was available were in stadiums. They are one of the few places where the carrier can justify building out all the small cells needed to blanket a small area with ultrafast 5G coverage.
