Matt Nagy said Monday that he is operating under the assumption that he will coach the team's final two games of the season.

The Bears have never fired a coach during the season, but a new rule in the National Football League allows teams to begin interviewing candidates if the coach is no longer employed or has been given notice that he won't return in two years. Nagy denied a report that he would be fired after the Thanksgiving Day game at the Detroit Lions.

The Bears snapped a three-game losing streak Sunday with a 25-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, but they are among eight teams that have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Nagy nodded and said that he assumed he would coach out the season.

Nagy said he was aware of no changes to the timing of the Bears' evaluation process for coaches. The meaningless game in Seattle was noted by his players' effort level.

He said that one thing you can always evaluate is effort from players. You never know what the result will be. You can always judge the effort. Yesterday we saw that. You value that. The players are in this building. They deserve the feeling to win. It's been a while. You have to enjoy it when you get a chance to win. I'm really happy for the players.

Nagy announced on Monday that five players were returning from the reserve/COVID-19 list: wide receiver Allen Robinson, safety Tashaun Gipson, corner Jaylon Johnson, tight end Jesse James and running back Ryan Nall.
