Leopardstown Christmas Festival: Envoi Allen labours on return to winning ways

After favourite Chacun Pour Soi was ruled out with an injury, Envoi Allen faced only two rivals in the Grade One race.

At the Christmas Festival, Envoi Allen and Rachael Blackmore worked on their returns to winning ways.

The former star youngster came into the Paddy's Rewards Club Chase after a poor run at Punchestown.

The horse only faced two competitors in the Grade One race after the withdrawal of Chacun Pour Soi.

The favourite was challenged by Battleoverdoyen and won by seven and a half lengths.

Envoi Allen received a ban after a photograph of him sitting on a dead horse was published. Cheveley Park Stud moved eight horses to the yards of De Bromhead and Willie Mullins after the incident.

Envoi Allen was able to shake off the challenger and pull away in the closing stages, after he had disappointed in the John Durcan Chase.

Blackmore said the absence of Chacun Pour Soi changed the dynamic of the race.

Blackmore said that they had a bit of a scare.

The winner was pushed out of the betting for the Champion Chase and the Ryanair Chase at the same time as the suspicion that a fit Chacun Pour Soi would have won was raised.

Blackmore said that Envoi Allen put his head down and ran to the line after a scare.

I think Henry was right to step him back. It's great to get his head in front after the race changed with the departure of Chacun Pour Soi.

They can only beat what they are up against and I'm happy with him.

The top two were the only ones who finished.

Willie Mullins was denied a third Grade One success in a row after his charge Chacun Pour Soi was ruled out on Monday morning after being found to have a leg injury.

School Boy Hours got up in the final strides to win the Paddy Power Chase on Monday.

Only one favourite had taken victory in the previous 16 runnings of the three mile extended handicap chase and the 12-1 winner, with Sean Flanagan on board, was the only one to win.

After Ben Dundee looked the likely winner after leading at the last, Flanagan bided his time.

Blackmore is on A Plus Tard.

Blackmore will be riding A Plus Tard in the Christmas meeting's big race, the Savills Chase.

The renewal of the Grade One feature 12 months ago was thrilling, but Henry de Bromhead's charge flew home to deny the reopposing pair of Kemboy and Melon.

The seven-year-old was runner-up in the Gold Cup behind Minella Indo, and is the odds-on favourite to win the race again at Prestbury Park in March.

After winning in the last two years, Kemboy is running in the same race for the fourth year in a row.

The nine-year-old is one of four runners for Willie Mullins, along with last year's third placer Melon, Janidil and Franco De Port.

Delta Work won the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown two seasons ago and is one of three horses that could be in the running for the Eclipse.
