The producer of Final Fantasy XII, Naoki Yoshida, wrote a letter to his followers that the game will be delayed by about six months. The next major reveal for the upcoming title is being pushed out to the spring of 2022.

It is not surprising that Final Fantasy is delayed. The development process for the first flagship Final Fantasy game for a next-generation console is a massive effort. In order to offset the effects of COVID-19, we have had to allow staff to work from home. This has hampered communication from the Tokyo office, which has led to delays in asset deliveries from our outsourcing partners.

The delay means that Final Fantasy fans will have to wait even longer to see more of the title, even though it was first revealed in September 2020. There hasn't been a new trailer, any more information on the game, or an estimated release window since the initial reveal.

Final Fantasy XV was the last release in the main series of the franchise. Square Enix has kept players busy in the interim, with more recent releases like Final Fantasy VII ReMake and the ongoing expansions for its online game, Final Fantasy XIV, which had to suspend sales of the games due to high demand. In addition to his work on Final Fantasy XIV, Yoshida is also the producer and director.

There is hope for Final Fantasy fans, as the team has spent most of the year addressing its delays and plans to improve the game.
