Soyuz rocket launches 36 OneWeb internet satellites into orbit

The internet service provider OneWeb was boosted by the launch of dozens of new internet satellites on Monday.

The OneWeb satellites were launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome. The time is 1310 GMT. Just two days after Arianespace launched NASA's James Webb Space Telescope into space on Christmas from French Guiana, Arianespace's next flight is scheduled for New Year's Eve.

"This is a special time of the year for a very special flight," Arianespace CEO Stéphane Isral said in a video message. He said that the launch was on the 15th of 2021.

OneWeb has launched eight satellites this year and now has 394 internet satellites in the sky. The 36 new satellites will be put into a new position about 45 minutes after liftoff. They'll head off to a final altitude of over one thousand km above Earth.

OneWeb is building a constellation of The company signed distribution agreements with partners in Australia, Canada and Europe for their service network this year, as they reached the 60% mark of their constellation in space.

Neil Masterson, CEO of OneWeb, told Via Satellite that the demand for internet is almost visceral. We think we have an opportunity to level up the digital divide.

OneWeb is only one of many companies vying for satellite internet customers.
Since the beginning of the year, the company has launched 1,944 satellites. The initial configuration of that constellation is expected to have at least 4,400 satellites. Amazon has yet to launch any satellites, but is developing a satellite constellation called Kuiper.
