Dan Lanning is leaving Georgia to become the new head coach at Oregon, but he'll still call defensive plays for the team in the Capital One Orange Bowl against Michigan.
Lanning was hired as Oregon's coach on December 11 to replace Mario Cristobal, who left for Miami.
Kirby Smart has named Will Muschamp and Glenn Schumann as co-defensive coordinators once Lanning leaves. Lanning says the defense will stay the same when the two teams play at Hard Rock Stadium. The app is available on the Disney and ESPN websites.
"Our approach will be very similar to what we have been doing all season," Lanning said. "We are not going to change the way we operate." There is more time with bowl prep. A lot of people make the mistake of trying to do too much in a shortened window, because there is a lot of time to get ready. We'll operate in the same way we've operated all season.
Lanning will be the new head coach at the University of Oregon. He was hired by Smart as the outside linebackers coach in the fall of 2018.
The total defense was second in the country and the scoring defense was first. They surrendered .
"We have to work," Dean said. We have to trust the game plan and execute at a high level. We didn't have elite focus and elite execution.
Lanning said the time difference has allowed him to focus on Georgia's CFP preparations early in the day, then on building a coaching staff, recruiting class and roster at Oregon at night. He has hired two people to be his co-defensive and offensive coordinators. Adrian Klemm, the offensive line coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is set to be hired by the University of Oregon.
"I'm really excited about what we're putting together there," Lanning said. The advantage of being on the West Coast is that we can focus on Georgia early in the day and then on Oregon later in the night.
Lanning has at least one game left with the team.
Christopher Smith said that Lanning hasn't gone on to his new job yet. He's been doing a great job with that all year and he's going to try to play out his role with us the best he can and to the best of his abilities. He's doing it until this thing is over.
