Dr. Anthony Fauci warned people to avoid attending large New Year's Eve parties where they don't know if their guests have been vaccined against COVID-19.
Fauci told CNN's New Day on Monday that people should not attend a New Year's Eve party if they don't know the status of the vaccine. There will be other years to do that, but not this year.
Fauci said that people who are boosted can gather with their family with minimal risk if they are also boosted.
The Omicron variant is taking hold in the US and this month has seen a record number of COVID-19 cases. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are 176,000 new cases reported per day.
Public health officials are urging Americans to get vaccinations. Fauci, a disease expert, said that vaccines still provide protection against severe disease, even though Omicron appears more prone to cause breakthrough infections.
