Seattle Seahawks' Pete Carroll tries to make sense of 'disappointing' late loss to Chicago Bears -- 'I have to do more'

The Seattle Seahawks' first losing season since 2011 hit a new low on Sunday when they lost to the Chicago Bears, a four-win team that was down to its third option at quarterback.

The most frustrating thing for Pete was how the team fell after leading by 10 points at halftime and by the same margin in the fourth quarter.

"That was about as disappointing of a loss as we've had," he said. We were in control of the game so much that we didn't let them stay alive and they were able to make their plays. They took advantage of the opportunity, and we had to do some things to give them that chance. It's a big win for those guys, who have been struggling all year.

I feel like I have to do more. I feel like I have to find ways to help our guys more so that we don't end up in a situation where we give them a chance.

Jody Allen, the defacto team owner, gave Pete Carroll an extension in the fall of 2020 that will keep him as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks through the 2025 season, despite the team's worst season since he became their head coach in 2010.

The outcome of Sunday's loss was that the Seahawks were out of the playoffs. They've lost double-digits for the first time since Jim Mora took over. They will finish last in their division for the first time since 1996, when they were in the AFC West. That was the second-longest active streak without a last-place finish.

Russell Wilson said that he was surprised by how Seattle's season has gone.

The issues old and new that doomed the Seahawks on Sunday were put on the onus of the individual.

He said that he was taking it the other way and that he was surprised his players hadn't responded. I need to do better. I'm not saying that the players didn't respond. I have to do better. I need to help them more and do more for them. Maybe that's a coach's ego. I don't mind being held accountable. I have to find a way. I'm expecting our other coaches and players to do the same thing. Everyone gives everything they have to make sure we are as good as we can possibly be. It starts with me.

A missed opportunity to extend their lead to at least 10 points in the fourth quarter was one of the many mistakes the Seahawks made Sunday. Wilson was sacked for a 13-yard loss on third down, leading to a 39-yard attempt that missed wide left.

The drive that led to the touchdown was led by Foles and ended with a touchdown to Jimmy Graham. Bears coach Matt Nagy went for two instead of kicking the tying PAT, and quarterback Nick Foles hit Damiere Byrd in the back of the end zone.

Wilson said his decision to try to scramble away from pressure on third down was a risk-reward play that could have resulted in a touchdown to Tyler Lockett. He said that a sack would have left them in a good field goal range.

Wilson said they've done it many times. We hit Tyler and other guys, but we weren't able to make a play. I was trying to move around and see if we could find a touchdown, because the situation happens where we don't end up making it, but I was trying to play ball like I know how to do.

The field goal should have been closer to 13 yards.

He said that they had to get rid of the football in that situation. We can't carry a sack there. We have to look at what happened on that play again, but I have to get that done. I have to get him to do that. I need Russ to pull that off. I have to get the coaches to make sure we remind him so that it doesn't happen. You kick the field goal from the end.

After going 24 of 24 on field- goal tries last season, Myers has gone 13 of 19 this year. He missed two kicks in a three-point loss to New Orleans and a PAT in overtime of a loss to Tennessee.

Over the last nine seasons, the Seahawks have won many close games, but they are now 0-7 in games decided by eight points or less. They were 47-36-1 in one-score games from Wilson's first season to the present. That was good for the league's sixth-best winning percentage.

They lost at home for the second time this season despite leading by at least 10 points in the fourth quarter. The other game was the Tennessee game. There has only been one instance of a team losing a game at home this season.

Wilson said that the toughest part of the season was that. We need to be able to finish better. We can do better. We can do things better.

Wilson's future is in question after he went public with his frustration after last season, leading to trade talks with the Bears. Wilson kept his focus on the here and the now when he was asked what would happen now that his desire to win another championship is no longer in play.

He said that they would get up tomorrow morning and watch the film. I'm going to watch it tonight to see where we can get better and where I can get better, and continue to learn as much as I can. Nothing changes in that sense.
