Miami out of Sun Bowl against Washington State due to COVID-19 issues in football program

The Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl will not be played by the Miami Hurricanes because of the issues of COVID-19.

Miami delayed its departure for the game in order to be able to play. The executive director of the Sun Bowl said at the time that they were not positive that they would come, but that they were doing everything they could to play.

Washington State arrived in El Paso, Texas, on Sunday.

The Hurricanes don't have enough players to compete because of the number of COVID-19 cases affecting the team's roster, according to a statement from the deputy athletics director/chief operating officer.

The football team will not be able to participate in the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl in 2021. The team worked hard all season to earn a bowl invitation and my heart goes out to our student-athletes, especially our seniors. I would like to thank Interim Head Coach Jess Simpson and the football staff for their hard work in preparation for the bowl game.

The impact this has on the Washington State program is regrettable. The Sun Bowl Association has done a great job in helping us navigate this situation. We are thankful for their support as a bowl partner.

Boston College and Virginia were the other two teams that were unable to play in the bowl game.
