Delta airline passengers are the worst hit.

Tens of thousands of airline passengers have been hit by the grounding of thousands of flights as a surge in Covid cases causes staff shortages.

The FlightAware data tracking website shows that more than 7,000 flights have been canceled since Friday.

Chinese and US airlines appear to be the hardest hit, with further delays and cancellation announced for Monday.

The crews testing positive are to blame for the canceled flights.

Staff who have not tested positive but have been in contact with those who have are being forced to self-isolated.

The Omicron variant is driving the rising Covid cases around the world.

More than 2,400 flights were canceled on Sunday, of which over 800 were to or from US airports.

Delta, United and JetBlue are the worst-hit US companies.

United warned earlier that a spike in Omicron cases had had a direct impact on their flight crews and the people who run their operation.

Omicron is the dominant strain in the US.

China Eastern is the most affected airline with more than 400 canceled flights on Sunday.

More than 120 flights have been canceled at the airport in the northern Chinese city of Xi'an.

There were more than 60 flights that were canceled on Sunday.

According to the University of America, over five million people have died from coronaviruses. There have been more than 200 million confirmed cases.
