Stylists reveal 12 items from your 2021 wardrobe that you should get rid of

There are a number of once-trendy items that are on their way out.

The fashion trends they think have gone out of style are discussed by Insider.

bucket hats and checkerboard prints are 1990s trends that are fading.

slimmer shoes are back in.

Some trends from the past few years have already started to decline.

Insider asked a professional hairdresser which trendy items would not be around in 2022.

The clothes and accessories you should think about getting rid of next year include basic black leggings and high heels.

Plain leggings will be replaced by unitards.

Lana Blanc told Insider that plain leggings will be replaced by more interesting stretchy garments in 2022.

She said that plain leggings are on the decline. If you're heading to a breakfast rather than a yoga class, I recommend wearing a unitard or split-seam legging.

If you want to keep your plain leggings, you may want to put them in your loungewear drawer.

People aren't ready to wear high heels again.

Platforms and wedges are more comfortable than thin shoes.

With many people still spending more time at home, it should come as no surprise that high heels aren't popular for 2022.

Blanc told Insider that after more than a year of wearing loungewear inside and outside the house, stilettos are still not ready to make a comeback.

She said that platform boots, block heels, and Chelsea boots were stylish and comfortable alternatives to sky-high stilettos.

Full baggy outfits are no longer popular.

Tara Dupuis told Insider that the baggy outfits and oversized garments from 2021 will be replaced by more tailored silhouettes.

She said that the trend for comfort-first baggy outfits will be replaced by more structured and fitted styles.

If you're not ready to let go of your comfy clothes, you can pair looser items with fitted ones, like wide-leg pants with a body-skimming sweater.

Wide cuts are in and skinny jeans are out.

skinny jeans are outshining wide-cut denim.

Blanc said skinny jeans should be the top item from your wardrobe in 2021.

She said that skinny jeans are dead. There is now a wide range of denim styles to choose from.

Blanc suggested trying a straight leg before diving into the wide-leg trend.

It's time to get a real purse.

Micro bags, tiny purses that can only hold a cellphone or a set of keys, had a fashion moment in 2021, but the trend is fading away.

Blanc said that people are tired of impractical bags and that he is glad to see the trend die. Invest in a handbag that can hold your belongings.

Don't be afraid to keep things minimal while opting for something that can hold all your essentials, because there's a difference between a micro bag and a small purse.

Cold- shoulder tops are old.

The style had its moment, but won't continue into the future.

Tops with shoulder cutouts are losing ground to newer styles.

"While these are still a favorite for many women, this trend has been around awhile and is simply starting to feel a little bit tired," Dupuis said.

Instead of showing off your shoulders, the stylist recommended you pick tops with fun arm details, like statement cuffs.

Replacing uncomfortable sweaters with easier pieces is a good idea.

People are realizing that shrug sweaters are hard to wear and that they are not good for wear.

She said that people are catching on to the fact that this style restricts the movement of your arms. "We're now seeing more cardigans than sweaters."

A shawl or scarf is a good choice for a light top layer.

Replacing your sneakers with slimmer styles is a good idea.

The sneakers have been in style for a while.

The "dad sneaker" trend may be on its way out, despite the fact that platform sneakers have been wildly popular.

Dupuis told Insider that he's glad that the trend of sneakers being replaced with mules or sleeker leather sneakers is over.

If you can't get the support of the sneakers, try putting an insert into a slimmer set of shoes.

Bike shorts should be in your workout clothes.

Gym clothes will once again include stretchy bike shorts.

The trend for sporting bike shorts as everyday wear is definitely on the decline now that we're once again dressing for work, dinner, and events.

She said to look for paper-bag shorts or pants as an easy-to-wear dressier alternative.

Tie-dye clothing may be replaced by more grown-up patterns.

The style can be seen as young.

Tie-dye was one of the most popular fashion trends of the 21st century. The fad may fade away in favor of more polished colorful items.

The tie-dye trend was youthful and playful, but it is already being phased out as we start going back to work and being in more formal settings again.

There is no need to remove the color from your wardrobe. Colorful items will keep the fun going.

Retro bucket hats are leaving again.

bucket hats, a staple of 1990s fashion, came back in the early 2020s. This trend is fading into fashion history again.

Williams said that bucket hats can look silly or overly casual. If you want to add to your look, you should throw on a classic baseball cap.

If you want to look like a retro person, combine knit beanies with oversized button-ups.

The checkerboard prints will be removed in 2022.

The retro pattern is fading out again.

Williams said she's happy to leave this trend in 2021.

She told Insider that checkerboard prints are difficult to wear in real life. The print trend is on its way out now that we're spending less time in the house.

If you still love the look, try adding it to your outfits in small amounts, like a checkerboard scarf or purse.
