New York State Shortens Covid Quarantine Guidelines For Essential Workers

New York Governor Kathy Hochul shortened the recommended 10 day quark period for essential workers in the state who have tested positive for Covid-19 to five days from 10 due to a surge in cases.

If Hochul's new guidance is followed, fully-vaccinated essential employees who work in healthcare, education, utilities, disposal services, sanitation, transportation, and essential retail businesses like grocery stores and restaurants, will be able to return to work after quarantining for five days with

Employees must not have had a high temperature over the past 72 hours, have no Covid-19 symptoms or improve their symptoms, and wear a mask while at work if they want to return to work.

Workers who are immunocompromised would not be able to return to work under the new guidance.

The CDC updated its guidance on Thursday to allow healthcare workers who show no symptoms and test negative for Covid-19 to be freed from a 10-day quark.

New York reported 44,431 new Covid cases on Thursday, a new record. The omicron variant of coronaviruses has been found to be more contagious than previous versions, but may have milder symptoms. The omicron variant accounted for over 70% of new Covid-19 cases in the United States last week, according to the CDC.
