Thursday Box Office: ‘Sing 2’ Soars, ‘Matrix 4’ Struggles, ‘King’s Man’ Flops

'Sing 2'

Universal.

In Thursday box office updates for anything other than Spider-Man 3 version 2.0 or Venom 2, Illumination's Sing 2 continued to play as the viable counterprogramming to Spider-Man: No Way Home. The musical earned another $7.5 million on Thursday, bringing its two-day domestic total to $17.745 million. Sing dropped 12% on the second day after an $11 million Wednesday, but that is a better hold than it was. It may not be an apples-to-apples comparison since Christmas Eve/ Christmas Day falls on Friday/ Saturday this year.
The sequel could make between $47 million and $55 million if it legs like Sing and Little Fockers, and could also make between $55 million and $65 million if it legs like Little Fockers. Either would be a win with or without a Covid curve. It would be easy for Sing 2 to become the biggest animated earner since Frozen II in November. Take a deep breath, Paw Patrol! I am a parent, so I am sure other parents will understand. The movie has made over 15 million dollars overseas for a new $32 million global gross.
The Matrix: Resurrections features Carrie-Anne Moss.

The Warner Bros.

The film earned another $4.1 million on Thursday for a two-day total of $10.5 million. Lana Waschowski's sci-fi sequel is still looking at a likely $20 million Fri-Sun/$32 million Wednesday-Sun debut. I am not happy about the drop, since Christmas 2010 when Christmas fell on a Saturday is when True Grit held steady with $5.5 million and $5.6 million. The hope is that general audiences and/or the casually curious will show up over the weekend, with positive reviews and heated online discourse. I will be curious to see the SambaTV numbers, but I am not sure if they are good or bad.
The man is the king.

Disney.

The King's Man was not relevant at the domestic box office. Matthew Vaughn's World War I-set prequel earned more than The Golden Circle on the second day, but it still earned less than The Golden Circle. We have been anticipating this for two years. Not every hit film is a franchise and not every hit franchise is a flexible monetizable one. The audience liked Kingsman: The Secret Service, but they don't care about the origin story. The Continental is going to be on television.
Mirabel is a 15-year-old girl who lives with her family in the mountains of Colombia in a magical house in a vibrant town called Encanto. Mirabel, a kind and humble teenager who puts the ordinary in extraordinary, struggles to fit in a family that is blessed with magical powers. Mirabel, voiced by Beatriz, will open in theaters on Nov. 24, 2021. All rights are reserved.

DISNEY.

Encanto will be on Disney+ today. That won't help the Disney animated feature get much farther than it is currently doing. Steven Spielberg's West Side Story is at $21 million, followed by House of Gucci at $46 million. This is an example of a questionable franchise flick performing as well as might have been expected in non-Covid, despite the fact that the Ghostbusters box set was not included.
