According to the billionaires index, Musk has a net worth of $274 billion. He became the first person to have a net worth over $300 billion in the fall of 2021. He replied to a former Amazon CEO's message with a silver medal emoji, to poke fun at him.

One of Musk's targets has been Bezos. While Musk has had a long-standing feud with Bezos, his use of social media has the power to spark discourse, drive cryptocurrencies, and, most recently, to vividly strike back at leading progressives in the Senate.

ProPublica released an investigation into how much America's wealthiest people pay in taxes. According to ProPublica's reporting, Musk's wealth grew by 14 billion dollars in four years, but he paid less than half a billion dollars in taxes.

According to ProPublica, Musk paid no federal income tax in the year. He responded with "?" when the outlet tried to reach him.

Lawmakers are taking action. Warren and Whitehouse wrote a letter to Senate finance chairman Ron Wyden, saying that the committee should investigate the allegations that the report revealed by homing in on financial institutions and their role in tax avoidance.
Warren and Whitehouse wrote that the tax avoidance by the nation's wealthiest individuals is profoundly unfair. It leaves the nation unable to pay for critical investments in infrastructure, education, and health care. It favors investment income over wages and distorts the economy.

It's not the first time that Musk has sent out a personal, or at least crude, message about a senator. Musk insulted Sen. Ron Wyden, the chair of the Senate finance committee, by asking if he should sell off 10% of his stock.

"I keep forgetting that you're still alive," Musk said in response to the senator.
