According to reports, the New Orleans Saints are set to sign Bortles to be their backup quarterback for Monday night's game against the Miami Dolphins.

Bortles is expected to practice Friday after he finalizes his contract with the team.

Ian Book is expected to start for the Saints on Monday, with starter Taysom Hill and backup Trevor Siemian both on the inactive list.

Bortles never lived up to expectations as the third overall pick in the Jacksonville Jaguars' draft. He's spent the past three years bouncing around the league in a reserve role.

He played for the Green Bay Packers this season. He was released late in training camp after signing with the team in May. The Packers re-signed him to their practice squad in November, but they let him go when Rodgers came back.

Since his time with the Jags ended, he's been with the Rams and Broncos.

Bortles has completed 59.3% of his throws for 17,649 yards with 103 touchdown and 75 interceptions in 78 career games. He's added 1,766 rushing yards and eight scores on the ground. His career passer rating is 29th among active quarterbacks.

The last regular-season appearance for the Florida native was in the 13th week of the season when he was a member of the Rams. It's unlikely that he'll see the field against the Dolphins unless Book suffers an injury.

Book, a fourth-round pick in the 2021, is set to make his NFL debut as the fourth Saints quarterback to start a game this season.

Jameis Winston suffered a torn knee in the Week 8 game. Hill and Siemian have been leading the offense.

Book will get a lot of attention as New Orleans tries to get into the playoffs.

Pete Carmichael told reporters that he knows that he loves to play and has a strong passion for it. "He wants to be out there, so I think those things will suit him well."

The Saints finish the regular season with games against the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina panthers. The quarterback situation is not known.
