No more, long live Boba Fett! Next week, The Book of Boba Fett will kick off a new adventure with Temuera Morrison's legendary Bounty Hunter, paving a new way forward for his criminal empire while exploring just how he cheated his death in Return of the Jedi. This isn't the first time we've seen Boba do this.
How did Boba Fett escape?
The Star Wars expanded universe has two moments when Boba escaped the sarlacc. The Star Wars comic had an original story that was funnier than most. Han was trying to get his bank to acknowledge the fact that he was when he returned to Tatooine in Star Wars #81 in 1983. Yeah.
It turns out that a Jawa Sandcrawler caught a masked man named Boba after he jumped out of the sarlacc pit and thought he was a Jedi. After the same Jawas kidnapped R2 from under Han and Leia, the duo chase after them, with Han diving into the Sandcrawler and discovering for himself that Boba Fett lived. The bad news for Han was that he didn't know that Boba had been partially digested. Han was too kind-hearted to abandon the hunter who had no idea he had ruined his life for the past few years. It wasn't to be, as the repeated yelling of Han's name outside the Sandcrawler caused Boba to go for his blaster in a bid to end Han's life. Han jumped away with R2, and the Sandcrawler fell back in the sarlacc. How else would he get out?
The Sarlacc was Escaped by Boba Fett.
After being back in the prison, Boba hatched a plan to escape again. In the 1996 anthology Tales From Jabba's Palace, J.D. Montgomery wrote a short story called "A Barve Like That: The Tale of Boba Fett." In it, Boba began using the sarlacc itself to make a connection to one of its other. With barely enough strength to make it out of the creature's maw as it tended to its wounds, Boba was discovered once more. Dengar is a rival bounty hunter. Dengar discovered the body of his one-time professional rival, Boba, and nursed him back to health after the detonation of Jabba's sail barge. Dengar was assisted by a young dancer from Jabba's palace who had survived her master's downfall, and believed that Boba had some connection to unlocking her past.
What happened to Boba Fett after he escaped the sarlacc?
After Dengar discovered that she was the high-born Kateel of the planet Kuat, she became friends with Boba. After abandoning the Slave, I went on a mission of vengeance against the leader of Kuat Drive Yards, Kateel, and rejoined Dengar as a hunter. He took jobs in secret with Dengar because people thought he had died at the sarlacc pit. After trapping the Alliance general on the moon of Nar Shaddaa in another attempt to get vengance against his former target, Boba re-emerging on the galactic stage, making himself known to Han Solo. Let's just say that Boba had a long, wacky life in the old EU.
The Book of Boba Fett will give us another alternate version of this event, which will be canonized as the official story in Disney and Lucasfilm's era of all-canon, all the time. It will be interesting to see what beats and ideas it brings to a character we know far more as a cipher than as a person. The series will begin streaming on Disney+ on December 29.
