Kim Potter’s Attorney’s Request That She Spends Holidays with Her Family After Guilty Verdict Shut Down by Judge Who Refused to Show Special Favor

Kim Potter, a former police officer in Brooklyn Center, was found guilty of manslaughter and first-degree murder. She will remain in jail until she is sentenced.

She could be sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined $30,000 for the first charge. She faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine for the second charge.

After four days of deliberations, the jury came to a unanimous guilty verdict.

Potter accidentally shot and killed Wright after grabbing her gun instead of her stun gun during a traffic stop. Wright was young.

The judge ordered Potter to be taken to jail immediately after the verdict was read.

Her attorneys asked for a bond so she could spend the holiday weekend at home. The Christmas holiday season was petitioned by her lead defense attorney. She is a Catholic. There is no need to incarcerate her.

She said that her remorse and regret for the incident was overwhelming. She is not a danger to the public.

The judge stated that she could not treat this case differently than any other case. Chu told the defense attorneys that Potter's bond should be revoked because he will likely be sentenced to prison.

The Times reported that her family members cried out to her as she left the courtroom.

She was taken out of the courtroom in handcuffs after she said "Love you" to her relatives.

The Wright family's legal team issued a statement after the verdict saying America must have accountability in cases like these to rebuild trust in police.

The statement said that the family was relieved that the justice system had provided some measure of accountability for the death of their son, brother, father and friend.

The statement continued, "From the tragic traffic stop to the shooting that took his life, that day will remain a traumatic one for this family and yet another example for America of why we desperately need change in policing, training and protocols." If we are going to restore the trust of Black and marginalized Americans in law enforcement, we need to have accountability and a commitment to listening.

It is imperative that we focus on the conduct of Brooklyn Center and the systemic failures that contributed to the death of Daunte.

Experts were called to testify about Potter's character, Wright's character and the probability of mistaking a stun gun for a gun during the high-profile trial.

Potter stated that she had never fired a gun while on duty, making her first time the fatal shot on April 11 that took Wright's life.

The jurors watched the police body cameras and dash cam footage. The video showed that she and Anthony Luckey pulled Wright over for having an expired license tag and because he had an air freshener hanging from his mirror. He had a warrant for his arrest after being pulled over.

Wright was arrested for an outstanding warrant and asked to get out of his car. He did.

When Luckey went to handcuff him, Wright got back into the car and threatened to shock him. She thought she was tasing him and shot him, but when she realized what she had done, she exclaimed, "(Expletive)! I shot him. I will go to prison.

She apologized after the conviction, according to ABC News. I did not want to hurt anyone.

Potter will be sentenced on Feb. 18.
