Schools fear mass exodus of teachers: 'We’re overworked, undervalued, and constantly under attack'

Kelly Kluthe, who has taught in public high schools in Kansas and Missouri, recently took a job at a private Catholic grade school.

Kelly Kluthe is a rock-star science teacher.

She received a grant to teach at a high school. She talks about how to make science lessons fun. She got her start as a teacher mentor through the University of Kansas Center for STEM Learning.

She has been teaching for a decade. I love science, kids and public education.

She quit.

Kluthe said that public schools don't love their teachers back, despite her belief in education for every student.

The working conditions have always been challenging, but have become unsustainable since the start of the Pandemic. We are under attack from people who have no idea what they are talking about.

I was stunned by the well-wishes I received from teachers across the country after I announced my resignation from public high school biology. Below is more information on why I'm leaving and what's next.

Kluthe is leaving a public charter school in Kansas City, Missouri, to attend a private Catholic school.

Thousands of teachers responded to her mid-year departure, many of whom said they were burned out and depressed.

They point to struggles over teaching in-person and remote students at the same time, filling in for peers during substitute shortages and feeling the pressure to make up for lost learning time. They are caught in the middle of debates over critical race theory and challenges to books in school libraries.

Steve Case, a former teacher and professor who ran the University of Kansas' UKanTeach program, says schools should prepare for a mass exodus of teachers in coming months.

He said that he was afraid of a collapsing system here. A large number of teachers will leave teaching and not come back.

Case, who taught Kluthe at KU, said that mid-year resignations are becoming more common. He said that teachers willgut it out for the kids until the end of the year. Some Kansas teachers are speaking out against a toxic environment.

Dianne O'Bryan, a veteran teacher, told the Blue Valley school board that they should ease up on the negative vibes or risk losing more teachers.

O'Bryan said that the parents who were angry and accusatory were a major factor in the teachers leaving. You have a choice to be angry, but we also have a choice to leave.

The stresses of teaching started to affect Kluthe's physical and mental health.

She said that she was getting anxiety almost every night. I was starting to resent the students for the behavior issues that were outside of their control. It wasn't a good place for me to be.

She wrote that she was exhausted. I am exhausted. I don't have anything left to give. I need to take a break and take care of myself.

Kluthe said that her private-school job has less pay but also less pressure. She pointed to a tight-knit school community and the freedom to be creative and follow her passions. She will teach fourth- and fifth-grade science, technology, engineering and math, as well as write a new social justice curriculum.

She wants to retire as a teacher, but she needs a school that will love her as much as she loves her work.

Education is very important. I don't know why you quit. I hope you figure out other ways to teach, even though you stepped away from traditional school. Our youth need help. The world is terrible. They could be saved by critical thinking and love for learning.

The retired professor said that Kluthe's comments echo a growing frustration among teachers who have not had a voice in discussions around education.

We are talking about it. He said that they know all this stuff. Hope gets lost when nobody is doing anything about it.

A surge in Omicron variant cases has prompted the administration of President Joe Biden to provide millions of free COVID-19 tests.

The creators of the "Alors On Danse" trend said black creators don't get credit the same way white creators do.

The unexpected happened to third graders in Washington, D.C., as they were finishing up their last week of school before Christmas. The omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus is likely the cause of the positive test for an 8-year-old child. "I didn't think they would have to separate me from my sister just days before Christmas," said Gretchen, when asked about the worst part of getting COVID.

There are hundreds of species of octopus. They are mollusks and not bones. They can fit their entire bodies through small spaces that are barely larger than their eyes. They can spread out like a parachute to capture prey, and extend their arms into the smallest crevices they can find for food. They are one of the most intelligent animals in the world and they have short and long term memories. This is a rare sight, as the octopus is hunting during the day. nocturnal feeders emerge when darkness envelopes the reef. They feed on crabs, fish, and other mollusks, and then grab a meal. Their brains are very efficient and they are able to control all eight arms. They are able to smell and taste food with their arms, which is a great benefit. When an octopus captures crabs or mollusks, they can be strong enough to tear them apart, but for those with seemingly impenetrable shells, it's an impressive method of overcoming the armour. The teeth are used to drill a hole. The calcium carbonate can be dissolved in the shells with the help of the saliva of the octopus. After creating a hole in the body, the octopus injects a toxin that will kill the animal, causing the muscles to relax so that the shells can be opened. The complex nerve systems in the arms of the octopus have two thirds of its neurons located there. They are capable of complex actions that don't require input from the brain. The octopus is a fearsome predator. The sea lions and sharks must be wary of the octopus. It is quick in the water for short distances. It can make it difficult for a predator to see or smell the octopus. It is well protected and can be hidden in small spaces. In the open, it is the master of camouflage and shape shifting. There are few animals in the ocean with the skills and abilities of the octopus. It is a predator.
