Despite their Saudi Arabia-led takeover earlier this year, it has been a tough season for the fans of the club.
The two teams are level on points in the bottom half of the table. There is little Christmas cheer among the fans because of the 11 goals conceded and only one scored in their last three games.
The club and their supporters are unhappy with the referees. The Daily Telegraph reported on Monday that the club are ready to make a formal complaint to the league over the standard of refereeing.
Without the decisions of the VAR, the team would be outside the drop zone.
We're looking at all VAR decisions in the league to see how they might affect the outcome of games.
It's more than just the number of times a team gets a favorable VAR call. When the VAR decisions are made, how they might have changed the course of the game and whether that impact would change the final score are more important.
The VAR Effect Table is brought to you by ESPN. We took all 59 VAR decisions in the Premier League and calculated how they might have changed the outcome of the matches. We will continue to track VAR throughout the season and find out who the true winners andlosers are.
The winners without VAR.
The VAR Effect Table is how we work it out.
The first VAR overturn in each game is the only one we take because the whole direction of the game has been altered. Think of it as a time travel movie or a Marvel timeline.
If a goal is ruled out for an obstruction, it's given as a goal.
If a penalty has been canceled, it is considered to have been awarded and scored, unless the team in question has a penalty conversion record below 50% over the season. For instance, so far this season, every other team has a 100% record, except for Manchester United, who have a 100% record. The penalty may be missed if it is less than 50%.
If a goal is awarded through a penalty or incorrect call through the VAR, the goal is not allowed.
We take into account a number of factors before making a prediction.
Results from the previous six matches show how a team has been playing.
If an incident happens late in the game, it's less likely that the score will change again after this point.
This allows us to take into account which team has been creating the better chances and which team is in the ascendancy.
A team's general strength plays a part. This takes into account the league position and the team's goal- scoring and defensive records.
A red-card decision being reversed may have an impact on the outcome of a match.
The results have been used to modify the table and figure out what impact VAR has had on the teams' positions.
The table shows each team's position after the amended results, with arrows indicating if their league position is better or worse without VAR. Not all teams have played the same number of games due to COVID-related postponements.
The big winners without VAR.
It is in fact thatEverton get back the most points and places without the use of the VAR.
The poor form of the Toffees has seen them plummet to 14th in the table, and that has led to a huge six points being gained by the Spaniard.
Where do they get their benefit? They picked up two points after having a late winner at Man United ruled out for being in an area that wasn't clearly defined, and they were two goals up at home to the Hornets before they were pegged back by a VAR decision. They had a VAR-cancelled penalty at home to Spurs that resulted in a win.
The points tally of the team jumps 50% from 10 to 15 and that lifts them out of the bottom half of the table.
The two clubs have had more negative VAR decisions than any other club. The worst in the league when it comes to goals is the fact that six went to the opposition as a result of VAR, and the net goal score is -4, both of which were caused by the VAR. Three decisions went against them, as the Magpies have conceded the most penalties.
The opposition has been able to take advantage of the VAR.
In August, West Ham were given an early goal at St James', while Saints were given an injury-time penalty to snatch a late draw. In a game, Spurs were given a goal because of an incorrect call.
Eddie Howe is going to have to hope that he gets more from the VAR if he wants to keep his job.
The only other club to benefit by more than one point was Burnley, who gained three through a 2-2 draw againstLeicester and a win againstArsenal. Sean Dyche's side are in the bottom three as they are overtaken by Newcastle.
The picture at the top of the table doesn't change despite the fact that both Manchester City andLiverpool got a net gain of one point. The tally is the same, and that means that they are further behind in the title race.
The teams are one point better off. Wolves are the only team in the league that doesn't have a VAR decision in their favor.
When all VAR overturns are factored in, the points tally and league positions are unaffected.
The big winners without VAR.
It has been a difficult start to life at White Hart Lane for Spurs, but they could be worse without the VAR.
The Spurs lost three points and dropped from seventh to 10th in the table. Their 2-2 draw at Newcastle is changed to a 0-1 defeat.
The only club in the premier league not to have a VAR decision go against them this season is Spurs. There was a chance of a VAR red card for Harry Kane and a VAR penalty for a foul on Diogo Jota on Sunday.
The win atEverton now a loss takes three points off them, and that sends them crashing onto 10 points, level with bottom-of-the-tableNorwich.
The resurgence is checked. The gap grows to six points as the Gunners lose two points. The VAR nullified the penalty when Ramsdale was found to have brought down Vydra. The formula says that the result was affected by the VAR decision.
Both Villa and Seagulls lose two points.
West Ham United and Manchester United both lose one point but remain in the top five. Yerry Mina's 85th-minute goal was allowed by the referee, which gave the home team a 2-1 win.
Crystal Palace lost one point. The men fall from 11th to 13th.
