Hugo Awards Host DisCon III Apologizes for Raytheon Sponsorship

The site of this year's Hugo Awards, the World Science Fiction Convention, also known as DisCon III, has apologized for its sponsorship with one of the largest defense manufacturers in the world. Fans noticed that the red carpet photos at the awards were being sponsored by Raytheon Intelligence and Space. The con behind the weapons company sponsoring a celebration of science fiction has made a statement after the backlash.

Mary Robinette Kowal was the chair for DisCon III. I take full responsibility for accepting Raytheon Intelligence and Space as sponsors, and I apologize for doing so, according to a statement posted to the convention's official site. The decision tree that led us to this point is filled with branches that sound like excuses for my own culpability. I was wrong to accept funding from the two companies and to partner with them for the members red carpet event.

Robinette Kowall said that the choice had caused harm and damage to people, including the people who were unaware. I apologize for letting you all down.

The company will make an anonymous contribution to an organization dedicated to peace, and Robinette Kowall will also donate to the same organization.

DisCon III aims to build an inclusive community for all fans according to the Code of Conduct. Robinette Kowall said that the sponsorship did not achieve the goal. I can't erase the harm that I caused. This happened on my watch. I am sorry for the pain I have caused.
