According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the built-in display on the cars ofTesla won't allow people to play video games while in motion anymore. This change, which will be included in a software update, comes right on the heels of the NHTSA announcing an investigation into the feature, which would include the evaluation of over half a million cars.
We were able to play a few games while the car was moving when the feature was tested by The Verge. A button was put on the screen to confirm that the player is a passenger, after a warning popped up saying only passengers are allowed to play.
Safety advocates said passenger play was dangerous.
A driver can still play a game while driving. The executive director of the Center for Auto Safety said there was no argument that the feature was not dangerous.
The NHTSA said in an email that it had been told that the feature would be changed. The agency said that the Vehicle Safety Act prohibits manufacturers from selling vehicles with defects that pose unreasonable risks to safety.
Over the past year, the agency has been paying a lot of attention to the company. The autopilot feature was opened up for investigation after it was found that the cars crashed into parked emergency vehicles. It has asked about the company's use of a "safety score" to determine who got the Full Self DrivingBeta, which came with a non-disclosure agreement.
