Despite rocky seasons for Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence and Jets' Zach Wilson, 2022 offers a brighter future

Only four times in the past 50 years have quarterbacks drafted first and second overall faced each other as rookies.

Lawrence and Wilson are squaring off late in the season, which means they have been banged around. The Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets are both 5-23 and have experienced the hardship of rebuilding. The franchise-savior business is not easy.

Jets coach Robert Saleh said it was a good reminder to celebrate the anomalies like the [Justin Herberts of the world]. This is usually what happens to rookies. They struggle.

Lawrence and Wilson are ranked 28th and 31st in Total QBR. Lawrence is tied for the lead with 14 picks. Wilson's completion percentage is the lowest.

What about the previous No. 1 and No. 2 battles?

TREVOR LAWRENCE

Despite the Jacksonville Jaguars' messy 2021 season, rookies like Trevor Lawrence still have their confidence and leadership intact.

What went wrong in the year of 2021.

Everything.

Urban Meyer created a toxic atmosphere in the facility, and he had Lawrence alternating days with the first team with quarterback Gardner Minshew throughout training camp. The only deep speed the Jags had was DJ Chark Jr. and Jamal Agnew. The wide receiver corps of the Jags has struggled to gain separation against man coverage, and their pass-catchers lead the NFL with 29 drops. James Robinson, the leading running back last season, got hurt and was benched twice. The offensive line has struggled in pass protection.

Try to be a quarterback in the league while figuring out how to play.

Lawrence has been hesitant to make throws over the course of the season. He has been wild with some throws, and has had little success throwing downfield, completing just 4 of 25 passes that traveled 20 or more yards in the air over the past eight games. Out of 37 qualified QBs, that's 34%, which is 34th. Over the past eight games, the offense has scored seven touchdown, but that's part of the reason. Lawrence needs more help.

He has made progress despite the mess.

Brian Schottenheimer said that he is progressing nicely. That's what you do with a young quarterback. If he keeps repeating those mistakes, you know that he's not listening and he's not making the necessary changes. You get excited when he's not repeating the same mistakes.

Lawrence's high point?

He led a pair of scoring drives in the final 6:39 to give the Jacksonville Jaguars a 23-20 victory over the Miami Dolphins in London to end a 20-game losing streak.

Lawrence drove 46 yards to set up Matt Wright's 54-yard field goal that tied the game at 20-20. They got the ball back with 1:42 to go. Lawrence threw a 12-yard pass to Laviska Shenault Jr. to put the Jags on the Miami 44 with five seconds to play.

Five rookies who have started at least 8 games are worst.

Lawrence said that five seconds was less than they needed, but that they could get down quick. It was a situation that was hard to prepare for, but having all of that, all those reps in practice of getting down, getting the first, getting down, calling the timeout really paid off.

Meyer and Bevell decided to run a play called "slider" instead of attempting a Hail Mary after calling a timeout. It would take a few seconds to throw. Meyer called timeout with one second to play after Lawrence completed a 9-yard pass to Shenault. Wright kicked a 53-yard field goal. Since then, the Jags have only won one other game.

They were on the air with Trevor Lawrence andZach Wilson.

There are three reasons to be optimistic.

1. Leadership. The 22-year-old Lawrence showed more leadership in the past few weeks than Meyer did in his 11 months on the job.

Lawrence told Meyer that they needed their best offensive player on the field as much as possible when Robinson was benched for fumbling. Lawrence met with the owner of the facility and shared his thoughts on what had been happening inside and the disappointing results on the field.

The rookies has taken responsibility for every mistake he has made, hasn't thrown his teammates under the bus, and hasn't shown any frustration on the field. He has hosted teammates and their significant others at his home a number of times, and it's something the players appreciate. Lawrence hasn't finished his first season yet, but he has already won the locker room.

Lawrence said that when things are crazy, winning consistency and being the same day in and day out is important. It's just keep being positive, be the same person and be consistent.

2. There is confidence. Lawrence claims he isn't experiencing a shred of doubt despite the fact that he has only one touchdown pass since November.

While the team is struggling, he is confident in who he is and what he can do on the field. It would be understandable if he were frightened, but Lawrence has shown great resilience, especially after Meyer's videos went public. It doesn't appear that Lawrence will be rattled as a young quarterback and recover from it.

3. This is a good job. Khan should have no shortage of interested candidates because Lawrence makes the job of the Jacksonville Jags arguably the best job that will be open during the off-season. The team needs a lot of work on offense, but working with a young, talented quarterback and an owner who has shown a lot of patience is a sought-after scenario. Khan will be able to be picky as well. Khan's track record in hiring coaches and GMs is not good, so that's a concern, but this is almost a perfect situation in terms of hiring a coach. A fresh start is good for Lawrence.

ZACH WILSON is a man.

The Jets rookies have protected the football better recently, with Wilson throwing just two picks in the past five games.

What went wrong in the year of 2021.

Wilson is trying to fit in with the structure of the offense while maintaining the ability that made him a star at BYU. It's a delicate balance that has resulted in stretches of hero ball. Early in the season, he tried to make dynamic, off-schedule plays instead of taking the safe, checkdown option. Game Manager Zach is what the coaches want, but Gambler Zach can be fun to watch.

Wilson said that he needs to play loose and not try and be a perfect pocket passing quarterback all the time. That's the most important thing. I'm trying to do what the coaches want me to do, but I need to be loose and throw the ball like I've always done, but just react and play within the offense.

He struggles to play within the pocket, sometimes escaping at the first sign of duress. That throws off the timing of the offense, a West Coast-based system that requires synchronicity between the quarterback's dropback and the depth of the receiver's routes. The so-called layups are Wilson's biggest issue. His completion rate on throws of 10 air yards or 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 888-282-0465 is the worst in the league. He should be able to clean that up with a mechanical tweaking or two. Wilson missed four games because of a knee injury.

Wilson has a lot to learn. He was out with a knee injury and the Jets' four most prolific offensive games occurred when he was out.

Dan Orlovsky, a former quarterback, said he had been critical of the man. I think he's had times where his ball handling has been poor. That is a big deal in this offense. I think he's had times where his feel in the pocket has been poor. I believe he had moments when his eyes were poor.

I think you've seen the growth where he ripped the ball into a seam. I think you've seen the growth of his patience. The play fakes have been better over the last two weeks. He needs an off-season where he can work on his mechanics.

Wilson's high point?

Wilson's signature moment came in Week 4 when he scored a 53-yard touchdown on a pass reception. His most impressive qualities were on display. He rolled to his right, motioned for Davis to run to the end zone and threw a perfect rainbow that traveled 57 yards in actual air distance, one of the Jets' longest completions in recent history. It was the kind of play we used to do when we were kids, telling our friends to go deep. Wilson pulled it off beautifully.

Wilson has only two touchdown passes in the past six games. The Jets' belief in him has not wavered.

"We're really excited about where he is and we're really, really confident that his arrow is definitely pointing up and it's only going to get better," said Saleh, whose youth movement won't succeed unless Wilson develops into an upper-tier quarterback.

There are three reasons to be optimistic.

1. Decision-making. Wilson has improved in this area in recent weeks, and that should continue in 2022. He has gone 81 pass attempts. It's not much, but it's progress when you consider he had 11 picks in his first 227 attempts. He's not forcing as many passes into coverage as he did early in the year, and he's using his physical ability to create off schedule. He said last week was his biggest game as far as being free.

He learned quickly that he's a long way from Utah, where he enjoyed a cozy pocket and threw into windows the size of Fifth Avenue storefronts. Reality hit him hard after a stress-free preseason. He looked lost in a couple of games. The weight of playing in the New York spotlight could have wrecked him. He has mostly handled the adversity. It should serve him well in the future.

2. The staff was seasoned. He will benefit from having Mike LaFleur as his offensive coordinator. LaFleur has experienced his own growing pains. He was 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 800-273-3217 Another year with LaFleur and another year in his complex system will help.

It will be interesting to see if the quarterbacks room is changed. They have three coaches working with Wilson, two more than usual. The accident that killed Greg Knapp on the eve of training camp was supposed to be Wilson's primary coach. The staff shakeup resulted in the hiring of a long time NFL assistant and Wilson's personal coach. It was crowded because of that.

The impact on Wilson of the Knapp tragedy was enormous. "For them not to have that guy that was with him on a daily basis, teaching him the ins and outs of this offense, it absolutely stunted his growth."

It should help if there is stability in '22.

3. The supporting cast is more experienced. Wilson's teammates include a pair of rookies, running back Michael Carter and wide receiver Elijah Moore. It's always dicey when rookies rely on rookies, but the upside is that they can grow up together in the system. Wilson needs a playmaking tight end, another receiver, and a lineman. Wilson will have a chance to rebound from one of the worst statistical seasons for a quarterback in the past 20 years if the front office can deliver.
