UK, EU and US ‘get more Covid vaccines in six weeks than Africa has all year’

The UK, European Union and the US have received more Covid-19 vaccine in the past six weeks than African countries have all year, according to analysis from the People's Vaccine Alliance.

The research comes after the former UK prime minister Gordon Brown called the roll out a "stain on our soul" and called for Moderna and Pfizer to share their vaccine recipes.

Despite making billions in profit, Pfizer and Moderna refuse to share the new generation of vaccine technology, according to a group of not-for-profits. The push to get the companies to waive their intellectual property rights has gained support from global leaders.

Between 11 November and 21 December, the EU, UK and US received over 500 million vaccine doses, while the African continent received 500 million.

If low vaccination rates are allowed to persist in the global south, the UK and other governments will risk trapping the world in an endless cycle of variant, boosters, restrictions and even lockdowns.

Anna Marriott, the health policy manager at Oxfam and the PVA, said that blocking vaccine access in poorer countries was prolonging the Pandemic and all its suffering for every one of us.
