The New York Knicks said that star player, Derrick Rose, will be out for at least eight weeks after having ankle surgery.

The team gave an eight-week timetable, but there is "optimism" that Rose could be back before then.

A source tells me that there's hope that Rose's return could be six weeks.

The Knicks signed the 2010-11 NBA Most Valuable Player to a three-year, $43.6 million contract after he enjoyed a strong spell following his return to New York.

Rose is a valuable member of the New York backcourt. He's shooting 40.2 percent from three-point range while averaging 12.0 points and 4.0 assists through 26 games. A bench unit that is exceeding expectations has been anchored by a 33 year old.

The Knicks have gotten a good return from their starters so far, but the success of their reserves is related to that. Kemba Walker was out of the rotation after a disappointing start.

New York is in the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference. It's not a given that head coach Tom Thibodeau will return to the playoffs.

The Knicks should have reinforcements to account for Rose's injury for the time being, as he has shown promise through his first two years.

This injury is another blow to Thibodeau.
