AstraZeneca Says Third Dose Provides Effective Protection Against Omicron

A booster dose of the Covid-19 vaccine significantly raised the level of neutralizing antibodies against the omicron variant, the drugmaker said on Thursday, a finding that is largely in line with results from other vaccine makers.

The Oxford University study showed that the levels of antibodies generated by a third dose of the vaccine were comparable to the levels generated by two doses.

The drugmaker said that people who received a booster shot had higher levels of omicron neutralizing antibodies than people who had recovered from a previous Covid-19 infections.

The company said that the trials showed that a third dose of the vaccine led to a six-fold increase in antibody levels.

The company is looking at the effectiveness of its next-generation Covid-19 vaccine.

Mene Pangalos, the head of the research department at AstraZeneca, said that it was important to understand how vaccines protect against Omicron. T-cell response provides protection against severe disease and hospitalisations, as we better understand Omicron.

The key background.

Oxford University and AstraZeneca are working to develop a vaccine to fight the omicron variant. The U.K. government found that two doses of the adenoviruses vaccine did not produce a level of neutralizing antibodies against the omicron variant. The emergence of the fast-spreading variant has led to a scramble for booster doses across the world as vaccine makers have indicated that an omicron-specific shot may take some time to roll out. Moderna said this week that third doses of existing vaccines remain the first line of defense against omicron.

A lab study found that the vaccine booster works against Omicron.
