Mason Mount interview: Improvement in new role under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea, plus tattoos, teeth and targets

Mason Mount has a new tattoo and is reflecting on his future. The tattoo is a permanent reminder of the night that the boy from Pompey became a champion of Europe.

He has scored in four of his last five appearances. Mount is producing a goal or an assist more often than any other player in the league this season, but his game is evolving under Thomas Tuchel.

There is a word on that tattoo.

He tells Sky Sports that he thought about it after the final. It has taken quite a long time to get the design and everything I wanted but Miles, the tattooist, is one of the best in the business. He did a great job with it.

I wanted to remember where we played and the atmosphere around the game, so I wanted that to be involved. The dragon was right for me. I love it and I am happy with it.

The game was decided by Mount's assist. If England had won Euro 2020 he would have been the only man to start and win the two biggest matches of the summer.

He says that his year was a roller coaster. I learned a lot when I went to the Euros after winning a trophy.

At the start of the season, there was a reduction in the amount of activity. I missed a couple of games because of my hammy problem. He missed the next game because of problems with his wisdom teeth, but he came back with a hat-trick.

It was not enjoyable. I went back to London after I woke up because I knew it wasn't right. I had to remove them all. It was frustrating because you feel like you can play. You are not hurt, but it has an effect.

Mount is making up for lost time after the operation. I can focus on football and have no problems. He has started the last six games and has already matched his best ever goal tally of seven.

He used to set himself a goal of 10, but no longer. I want to score more and more. It's a big part of my game and it means a lot to me.

The possibilities have been opened by a change of role.

I played an eight in my first year or two. I am playing higher up as a 10-slash-winger so I have more chances to make it into the box. They want me to be a threat and in the box so that's a big focus for me.

Statistics show that Mount is getting more touches in the opposition box than ever before. He says that he has seen an improvement in his chances of getting into the box in the last few games.

The opposition box has more touches that show it is working.

His switch to the right is not normal for a right-footed player. I was on the left last year. I used to cut inside on my right. There is more focus on crossing and going down the line.

His relationship with another academy graduate, who he has known for a long time, is growing. James played the ball into his path for the opening goal, his fifth assist of the season. He has been playing well.

The play between the two might be the best weapon.

I know how he likes to combine with someone. We are trying to create chances and work off each other. When he moves inside, I go on the outside. It's all about getting the best out of each other.

Mount went on the outside for the goal, just as he did when he volleyed against West Ham. He has the ability to make penetrative runs towards the near post, which is why he is flourishing in this new role.

It is a different position with different demands but I am comfortable coming inside and finishing with my weaker foot. I've tried to be a threat with both.

His first nine goals in the premier league were scored with his right boot, but his father taught him how to score a goal in his garage. He would teach the brain about the importance of using both feet by wearing different coloured socks.

He used to tell Mount that he would kick a ball against the wall 100 times with each foot.

I remember kicking that ball for hours. I did it for a long time. You don't want it to feel different when you are on your left foot and on your right foot. That has helped me a lot.

You don't know how the ball is going to fall when it comes into the box. You can't have a thought in your head, like, "I am not going to hit it." You have to take it in your stride and hit the target. I try to do that.

There was a gesture towards the away fans. He was on a loan at Derby County. Fans don't forget anything. You want that back and forth, so they gave me some stick. I thrive off of it.

He is looking forward to the back-to-back games between the two teams in April. They are both coming away from home. That is even better. It will be hostile but you have to use it. I love it.

This type of mentality quickly won over Tuchel. There were concerns when he was left out of the German's first team. Mount was a favourite after the next seven. The new manager has improved his game.

He has improved my play. I have never played as high up as I have under him. Getting into the box is the final pass. It's about putting pressure on myself to be a creator.

Everyone at the club is under pressure. Only Manchester City have beaten them this season, but they have leaked points away in three of their last four home games. Mount's team is six points behind the leaders.

Every point counts when you are putting pressure on yourself to win the premier league. We were top for a while, then we drew some games and fell to third. The race can be over very quickly if you drop points.

The title has always been our goal. We want to be there. We feel like we have a chance this season. We can definitely do it. We have the confidence. We need to be focused too. We need to do the basics well.

Maybe there will be another tattoo if she can do that.

"I don't think I can do it for every trophy or I would be covered by the end of my career, hopefully," he laughs. We will see. The goal is that. That is a dream.
