Bundesliga: Meet the worst team in Europe's major top divisions

Greuther Furth is 11 points adrift of the bottom of the Bundesliga.

There were seventeen games played. 14 losses. 49 goals were conceded and the bottom of the table.

Greuther Furth are currently the worst team in Europe's major leagues because they are breaking records for the wrong reasons.

The newly-promoted Bavarians have the lowest points total of any team in Europe's top five leagues this season, sitting bottom of the table with just five points after 17 games.

Their run of 14 matches without a win was the worst start to a season in the history of the Bundesliga. That is their only win of the campaign so far.

Furth are called 'Kleeblatter' and they have not had luck in their first season in the Bundesliga.

During the past months, the situation became so dire that head coach Stefan Leitl pleaded with the public not to feel sorry for them. The next goal is to applause instead of pity, according to a large sports magazine.

Even though 13 goals were scored, there has not been a lot of applause, with even opposing fans unsure if they should cheer the fourth or fifth goal.

The low point was reached when the side was outclassed and beaten 7-1 by the team in December.

The head coach was surprised by the point gap.

The quality of the squad has been called into question by the one performance. The club's hierarchy made a few signings after they were promoted to the Bundesliga.

Jetro Willems, Nick Viergever, Sebastian Griesbeck, Max Christiansen, Jeremy Dudziak, and Nils Seufert arrived last summer.

The cost of Viergever, Dudziak and Griesbeck was over one million dollars. The club lost two players in return.

The talented Christiansen came from third-division side Waldhof Mannheim and is now being asked to act as a playmaker. After spending six months on the bench, veteran left-back Willems has played most of the matches.

"No one expected that we would be so far behind," said head coach Leitl, indicating that he believes his team are much better than their points record.

Furth's style of play would not be changed by the team's style of play.

He believes that the team's DNA is to move forward and not solely defend when they are outclassed.

There is little time to celebrate Christmas.

Furth won their first game of the season against Union Berlin and then finished the first half of the season with a goalless draw against Augsburg. Most have written them off because they are 13 points off safety.

The players were called back to training on December 27th.

We owe a good Ruckrunde to ourselves and the people out there. The sporting director said that he expects them to play in the Bundesliga.

Furth doesn't talk about avoiding being demoted, only about improving their performance. You have to start somewhere.
