Israeli PM announces fourth Covid jab for over-60s to tackle Omicron

The fourth Covid vaccine will be available to Israelis over the age of 60, according to the prime minister.

He said that the citizens of Israel were the first in the world to receive the third dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and that they are continuing to pioneer with the fourth dose.

Bennett spoke after a meeting of the country's ministerial coronaviruses cabinet which was convened amid growing concern over the spread of the Omicron variant.

The premier said that the decision to go ahead with a fourth dose of the vaccine will help the world get through the Omicron wave.

The fourth shot can be given to people who have not received the third shot, as well as elderly people and the medical teams at least four months after the third shot.

Bennett's office said that the premier had instructed the health ministry and health funds to prepare for the vaccine operation.

The first death of a patient with the Omicron variant was in Israel. He had a number of serious pre-existing conditions, but the hospital in Israel confirmed his death on Tuesday. The man in his 60s died on Monday, two weeks after he was admitted to the coronaviruses ward.

The patient had a lot of serious illnesses. His morbidity was caused by pre-existing illnesses and not by respiratory infections from the coronaviruses.

There were at least 340 cases of Omicron in Israel according to the health ministry. Israel expanded its travel ban this week to include the United States, Germany, Italy, Turkey and Canada.
