McDonald's Japan is rationing french fries as the fast food chain can't import enough potatoes amid the supply chain crisis

McDonald's Japanese outlets will stop selling large and medium-sized french fries due to potato shortages.
The fast-food chain said in an announcement on Tuesday that it will only sell small-sized fries for a week at all of its stores in Japan.

The company instituted the policy because of the potato shortage caused by global supply chain disruptions and massive floods in Canada.

McDonald's Japan said it's shipping its supplies via air freight.

The company has dealt with potato crises before.

McDonald's Japan put a limit on customer purchases of french fries after a US labor dispute caused shipping delays, according to a report. The fast-food giant had to import over 1,000 tonnes of frozen fries using air freight at the time.

Japan is a major importer of cooked and prepared frozen potatoes.
