The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which is also known as the Academy behind the Academy Awards, has released its annual list of tunes that are eligible for the Best Original Song trophy. Dozens of tracks were submitted for consideration, but the total has now been reduced to just 15 titles. Voters will choose the five that will be nominated, then they will choose a winner.
The list of stars vying for one of the five slots in the Best Original Song category includes chart-toppers like Ariana Grande, U2, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, Kid Cudi, and both Bey and her husband Jay-Z. Kid Cudi is the only artist who has two songs in the running.
Almost every track that is in contention for a coveted Best Original Song nomination features a superstar, one who will be up for the honor should the composition end up a possible winner. The producers and writers of the song actually put it together, not the musicians who sing it. This year, almost everyone who sang a single for a movie also had a hand in creating it, which means that sometimes the well-known figure who made the song a hit isn't up for the prize.
H.E.R., Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are all in the running again. Nicholas Britell, U2, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Diane Warren are past nominees. The latter artist has been nominated for this trophy a dozen times and currently holds the record for the most nominations without winning.
