Biden says fully vaccinated people can still safely celebrate the holidays as omicron spreads

President Joe Biden spoke about the fight against the coronaviruses disease at the White House in Washington, U.S., on December 21, 2011.

President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that Americans who are fully vaccined can celebrate the holidays, even as the omicron Covid variant rapidly spreads across the U.S.

The president said that people who are fully vaccined will get breakthrough infections in the coming weeks, but they are protected against serious illness and death. He said that people who have received a booster vaccine have high levels of protection against hospitalization.

Some people will get Covid, potentially in large numbers, according to Biden. There will be positive cases in every office, even here in the White House, but these cases are not likely to lead to serious illness.

Biden warned that people who are unvaccinated have reason to worry. If you get sick, you are likely to spread it to others, including families and friends, the president said.

Biden warned that Omicron is serious and potentially deadly for unvaccinated people.

The president said that the U.S. is better equipped to fight the disease than it was when it first hit. In March of 2020 Biden said, Covid led to lock downs around the nation and a surge in deaths in epicenters like New York City.

Biden rejected the idea that his administration failed to prepare for a surge in demand because of the widespread shortages of at- home testing kits.
