Failure to comply with the new rules in Atlanta can result in fines of up to $50 for additional offenses, according to an emergency order issued by Bottoms.
In addition to Atlanta, city officials in Connecticut have announced that indoor masking requirements will be put back in place on Tuesday afternoon, when the new measures are announced by the mayor.
The Mayor of Washington, D.C. announced Monday that a mask order would be in place until at least the end of January in response to a surge of coronaviruses.

The omicron variant of the coronaviruses has been detected in southern Africa. Omicron accounted for 73.2% of new infections last week, up from 3% the week before, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Early studies suggest that the strain is more resistant to vaccines.
